Breech Presentation & Traditional Chinese Medicine - Supporting you and your baby in late pregnancy

What is a breech presentation?
A breech presentation is when a baby is lying bottom-down in the womb rather than head-down. This is common earlier in pregnancy, but by the final weeks most babies turn head-down on their own.

How TCM views breech presentation
In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), pregnancy is seen as a time when energy (Qi) should flow smoothly, and balance in the body is especially important. TCM theory suggests that when energy is balanced and the body is well supported, there may be more space and ease for a baby to move.

What TCM traditionally uses
TCM practitioners sometimes use:
Acupuncture — placing fine needles at points chosen according to your individual needs.

Moxibustion — warming a point on the little toe (BL67) with a herbal stick made from Artemisia vulgaris (moxa).

Traditionally, moxa at BL67 has been used to encourage foetal movement in cases of breech presentation. This is usually done once or twice daily for a short period over several days, and may be done in the clinic or taught for home use.

What the research says
Some studies have looked at acupuncture and moxibustion for breech presentation, but results are mixed and not conclusive. More research is needed to understand exactly how these methods may help.

It’s important to know
These techniques are not a substitute for medical care. Always let your midwife, GP, or obstetrician know if you are considering any complementary treatment. Treatments are gentle and tailored to you, your comfort and safety are always the priority.
